5 Ways to Support Staff Volunteerism

A company that volunteers is a happier and better company, but that is only a small part of the picture. The support and encouragement that an employer gives to its employee’s volunteer activity can make a world of difference to their outcome! From something as simple as a kind word to an elaborate partnership with a local nonprofit organization, there are many ways employers can encourage volunteering among their staff. A variety of approaches can be utilized to reinforce or complement one another and suit the needs of the company. Read on to find an approach that is right for your organization.

Acknowledgement

Acknowledging the volunteer work of employees may seem like a small thing, but projects and people alike thrive on acknowledgement. How can the employer acknowledge that employees are involved as volunteers and try to accommodate this reality whenever possible?

  • Counting relevant volunteer work as experience when considering candidate for a promotion
  • Allowing leaves of absence without pay for volunteer work
  • Allowing employees to adjust their work schedules to make it possible to carry out their volunteer work activities

Promotion

Recognition of employees who are involved with voluntary organizations and highlighting their achievements creates an atmosphere in which other employees become eager to be involved and be recognized themselves! How can an employer promote the service employees are doing?

  • Sending a letter or memo to all employees in which the CEO expresses his or her views on the value of volunteer participation
  • Sending a thank you note to employees during National Volunteer Week
  • Publishing activities or a regular column in the company newsletters profiling the volunteer work of employees

Encouragement

Perhaps the employer has already acknowledged and promoted staff volunteer work. Take the next step, with policies that encourage employees to volunteer!

  • Encouraging volunteer work as a legitimate way to gain skills and experience for professional development
  • Offering pre-retirement seminars promoting volunteer work
  • Featuring appeals in internal newsletters from employees on behalf of organizations they support
  • Inviting speakers from volunteer organizations to address employees

Endorsement

Several entities have a vested interest in service work done by employees. Get local nonprofits involved by working actively with volunteer groups to encourage employees to do volunteer work. How can an employer do this effectively?

  • Liaisons with a local volunteer center regularly to make employees aware of volunteer jobs available in the community
  • Developing a skill bank to record the skills and experience of employees who are interested in volunteer positions
  • Offering to help in kind or free services to the organizations for which employees volunteer without requiring the organization to identify or publicize the source

Sponsorship

Perhaps your company is saturated in the spirit of volunteerism already! It may be time to consider sponsorship, volunteer work done under the auspices of the company.  How can an employer institute this corporate driven element of service?

  • Appeals to the employees to volunteer for a specific organization
  • Nomination of employees to serve on the board of a specific volunteer organization
  • Employer sanctioned volunteer time and company projects that take place in regular working hours

Thank Your Volunteer Partners!

We often talk about ways to recognize volunteers, which is incredibly important. However, there are others in the volunteer realm who deserve recognition as well. Show the value that your organization places on volunteer engagement by recognizing staff members who engage and work with volunteers. Recognize your organization’s staff members who partner with volunteers with these tips.

  • During any formal recognition ceremony or staff meeting, be sure to recognize the staff member who works with the volunteers as well. This small action reinforces your organization’s emphasis on the partnership of volunteers and staff to carry out the your mission.
  • Highlight excellence in staff engagement when any employee has:
    • Thought up new ways to thank or recognize volunteers
    • Created an innovative volunteer program
    • Done an incredible job supporting and working with volunteers
  • Be sure to ask for staff input in evaluating and designing volunteer participation. Who knows better what is needed than your organization’s own dedicated staff?
  • A personal touch is always appreciated. Informally ackwnoledge an employee’s support of volunteers by thanking them in person or writing them a personal note. Thoughtfulness goes a long way.
  • Feature the staff’s work in any promotional materials or information to be sent to your organization’s board.
  • Share staff support of volunteers via electronic means as well. Your organization’s blog, website, or even a staff-wide email could be deemed appropriate.
  • Consider asking volunteers to nomiate a “Most Supportive Employee” in their efforts and present that award at an event.
  • In the same vein, consider asking volunteers to share their appreciation for staff, perhaps even in a silly way. There is rarely a bad time for a volunteer skit!

Can a Holiday Office Party Be Meaningful?

It’s that time of year again, the annual office holiday parties! Great, a day full of awkward socializing, lots of food, and buying presents for people you don’t know very well. What could be better, right? Using this time to volunteer as an office instead of spending awkward quality time together!

“How can this happen?” you may be wondering. By turning your Secret Santa gifts into service donations!

“Whoopee! Wait now what? How do I actually do this in my office?”

Easy, tell employees to bring a toy that they think the employee whose name they drew would have liked as a kid. For example, bring in a football for that jock in your office, a Barbie doll for the fashionista, or a game of chess for the deep thinker. Once the gifts are exchanged, donate them to children in need! Not only does your office get to have a good laugh about the toys that they get, children also get to have an awesome Christmas thanks to your office donations!

Volunteering and donating to your office’s favorite charities is a great way to make a solid bond between co-workers. Want some more ideas to keep this holiday spirit of giving up around your office? Look, we’ve got more!

  • Volunteer for your co-workers favorite organizations or causes: Send around an email asking co-workers to share where they like to volunteer or what they are passionate about. Make these ideas into a day of employee service. Choose a place close to the office and try to get all staff members to attend. Try closing the office that day so that your co-workers can reflect on the experience together. Nothing spells teamwork like volunteering as a team!
  • Make toys or decorations for your community members: Is there a retirement community in your area? A children or family shelter? They would love help with Christmas celebrations this year! Make cards or pictures so that they can decorate their walls with lots of holiday chair. Make toys or assemble toys for families or children in need so that they can have an unforgettable Christmas! It is a great way to spark conversation among employees that will focus on something besides the stresses of work.
  • Make a donation to your company’s favorite cause: Do you have spare change laying around your desk or in your pocket? Great donate it to those who need it more than your desk surface! Vote on a charity to make donations to and pass around a collection bucket to your employees at the Christmas party. After donations are received recruit employees to personally donate the money to the designated charity. Who knows, they may like this idea so much that it will become an office tradition?
  • Pick an ornament, give a gift: Put up a Christmas tree in the office with names and ages of children or families who may be struggling this holiday season. Get in contact with your local shelters to see who will sponsor this project. Employees can grab a name, buy and wrap a present to put back under the tree. The presents will then get donated to the needy families. Not only will families get a better Christmas thanks to your company’s presents, but also your office will be decorated with the tree and Christmas presents.
  • Participate in generationOn’s Holiday Gift Campaign: GenerationOn and Hasbro have a holiday gift campaign running until December 13, 2011. Every time a pledge of service is made, a Hasbro toy is donated to Toys for Tots (up to 100,000 toys). A pledge of service can be made on behalf of an entire organization or company! It is an easy way to not only get this idea of giving back initiated into your office environment, but also a good way to give back to those in need!

Volunteering is a great way to bring employees together because it is a way to collaborate on something other than work. When all employees feel passionate about the activity they are doing they can build a more effective team.

2010 Corporate Engagement Awards of Excellence

We are at a critical moment of need and opportunity for service in our communities.

While the economy has started to grow again, the downturn has caused hardship for millions of Americans.

Yet in these tough times, the momentum for service has never been stronger.

Volunteering is on the rise and organizations and corporations are redefining service and embracing social responsibility.

Given our economic climate, the Points of Light Institute is very excited to honor companies that represent best-in-class employee volunteer and engagement programs, who are redefining service and embracing social responsibility.

Since its inception in 1993, the Points of Light Corporate Engagement Award of Excellence has been recognized as one of the most prestigious awards programs honoring outstanding employee volunteer programs.

More than 60 companies have been honored for their overall employee volunteer efforts.

I’d like to share a bit about this year’s Corporate Engagement Award of Excellence honorees.

AT&T

AT&T’s commitment to volunteerism dates back over 100 years to Alexander Graham Bell.

Bell was the first member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, which was formed to give employees a way to unite and support the community.

Since then, the AT&T Pioneers has grown into one of the largest industry-sponsored volunteer organizations, with nearly 325,000 members.

Last year, the company launched “AT&T Cares” – a company-wide volunteer initiative designed to encourage employees to engage in community service that is meaningful to them and their communities.

In 2009, AT&T Pioneers and employees donated more than 8.5 million hours to community outreach activities – worth over $176 million.

Campbell’s Soup

Campbell’s Soup has a long-standing commitment communities in which they live and work.

They are committed to nourishing neighbors by providing volunteers to nonprofit organizations and leveraging the unique skills of employees through the Nourishing Our Neighbors program.

Campbell’s strives to couple skills-based volunteering, financial contributions and in-kind giving to provide well-rounded support and impact with local nonprofit organizations and residents of these communities.

In the year since the launch of the Nourishing Our Neighbors initiative, U.S. employees logged more than 18,000 volunteer hours, benefiting over 200 organizations.

Dollars for Doers grants quadrupled since the change was implemented.

Participation in the company’s annual week of service, Make a Difference Week, increased 40% in 2009.

Intel

Intel strives to operate with uncompromising integrity and believes that their business success depends on their continuing ability to be a trusted, responsible, open and engaged corporate citizen. Intel employees engage with communities through the Intel Involved volunteer program and community leadership activities.

The “Intel Involved” program encourages employees to share their expertise and enthusiasm with communities through volunteerism and Intel employees spend thousands of hours mentoring young people, providing technical expertise, serving on task forces, and participating in community service projects.

Through the company’s skills-based volunteering initiative, employees apply their specialized skills in law, marketing, IT and lean manufacturing practices to benefit schools and non-profit organizations.

The Intel Education Service Corps program sends small teams of high-performing employees to developing countries to collaborate with a NGO to deploy the Intel®-powered classmate PCs.  To date, this program has reached more than 15,000 students in Bangladesh, Bolivia, Egypt, India, Kenya, and Vietnam.

Old National Bank

From humble beginnings,  Old National Bank has grown to its current position with more than 160 banking centers and 2,800 associates.

Despite their growth, they have never wavered from their original focus on community.

Old National Bank’s commitment begins with President & CEO Bob Jones and the Old National leadership team, who empower associates to donate up to two paid volunteer hours a month through the company’s “ONe Community” program.

Last year, Old National associates donated nearly 80,000 total hours in support of more than 2,000 organizations. Associate volunteers are recognized for their efforts on the company Intranet site, and those with 25 hours or more of service each year join the “Volunteer Honor Roll” in Old National’s annual Community Investment Report.

In addition, a ONe Community Team Award is given each quarter to the associate team that best exemplifies the meaning of community care and involvement. Quarterly winners receive a $500 donation to the non-profit organization of their team’s choice, and an overall annual team award winner receives a $1,000 donation.
