Action Heroes Needed!

Today is a BIG day for youth service! “Why?” you ask. July 2nd is the beginning of generationOn’s summer youth service campaign, Community Action Heroes. In partnership with Hasbro, generationOn wants parents to teach their kids or teens the importance of serving their communities.

Summer is the perfect time to get kids involved in volunteerism with all the extra time they have on their hands! GenerationOn will rally thousands of youth volunteers to become active heroes within their community.

How does it work? Interested parents and youth can access the Community Action Hero application through the generationOn website. Kids can choose a challenge team and project ideas. Once a pledge is made, kids can also challenge their friends to be heroes through the use of social media. Once the challenge is met, kids can share their projects through video, essays, or pictures to inspire other youth. All participants will receive a certificate of completion after the project as well!

What issues can your kid pledge to volunteer for?

  • Animals: Five to seven million animals are rescued by shelters annually. Your child can help animals in the community by donating cat or dog food, bathing and playing with shelter animals, cleaning a dog park, raising money for guide dog training, creating emergency preparedness packs for pets, raising money for animal shelters, etc.
  • Literacy: Although summer is a great time to catch up on a new book, many kids do not have access to reading materials in their community. Kids can make a big difference for their neighbors by writing letters to policy makers asking to make education a priority, reading to other children, holding a book drive, organizing a book fair benefit, etc.
  • Health: Summer is a great time to be active outside, but unfortunately not all kids are healthy enough to play outside. Your child or teen can be a hero for sick children by making a lemonade stand, making books to make a smile, bingo at a senior home, anti-bullying posters, toy drives, etc.
  • Environment: No matter your age or size, we all have the power to improve our environment. Your child or teen can learn the value of helping the environment by getting his or her household to use eco-friendly cleaner, cleaning up a park or nature walk, hosting a green thumb party, cleaning up a lake or river, starting a recycling program, etc.
  • Homelessness: 770,000 homeless children are currently enrolled in United States public schools; the summer time is even harder because they do not have the safety of a school. Your child or teen can get involved in solving this important problem by making a work of art for a shelter, making a pillow buddy, hosting a princess party to collect fairytale books, making health kits, collecting school supplies boxes, advocating for the homeless, etc.
  • Hunger: Although summer is a special time for certain seasonal meal favorites, many kids do not receive their proper nutrients because they do not get school lunches in the summer. Your child or teen can be a hero for hungry children by participating in meals on wheels, making lunches, sharing extra food from their garden, hosting a fundraiser event to tackle hunger, etc.
  • Military: Our military men and women volunteer their lives daily to better our country, Your child or teen can show his or her gratitude to military servicemen  and veterans by making care packages, sending letters, sending them fun items to bring a smile, hosting a veterans’ dinner, interviewing and sharing a veteran’s story with the Library or Congress, etc.
  • Emergency prep: Summer is a time to relax, but is also a time for many heat related disasters and emergencies. Be a hero in your community and get others prepared by providing hurricane victims with essential items, collecting smoke detector batteries, making and delivering first aid kits, raise awareness about summer emergencies, providing homeless shelters with evacuation plans, etc.

The world needs more action heroes, are you up to the challenge? We hope that your children will make the pledge to accept one of these eight hero challenges to better his or her community!

Stay Cool, Volunteer from Home!

Yikes! It’s hot outside. We are expecting record high temperatures this summer. Who wants to go outside into the heat and humidity when there is an air conditioner on the inside?

Don’t let these high temperatures keep you from volunteering in your community during the summer. The summer is a great time to get into some indoor volunteer opportunities. What can you do? Check out our volunteer opportunities below!

  1. Plan your fall service project! There is nothing wrong with planning for service a little bit early. Service planning can actually take quite a bit of time. How can you plan your service project so early you may be asking yourself?
    • Decide on a service project location.
    • Check out their website. Find out whether or not you need to go through an orientation before you serve, get necessary certifications, etc.
    • Service project fill up quick, sign up early!
    • Recruit friends by calling them or sharing your project through social media channels
    • Make a list of supplies that you may need
  2. Gather gently used belongings that you can donate or sell at a garage sale to raise donations for your favorite charity! These are both great ways to volunteer without leaving the air conditioner because you not only get some cleaning done, but you can also largely help your community.
    • Go through your gently used goods and decide what you can give away and what you cannot possibly live without.
    • Sort these things into boxes or bags so that you know what you have
    • Locate your nearest shelter or donation center to bring your things too. Some organizations, such as the American Kidney Foundation, will even come and pick up your items!
    • If you are planning a yard sale get the word out by putting signs out around your neighborhood.
    • Decide what organization or causes you would most like to donate your proceeds to (maybe one that will benefit your local community?)
    • Let your neighbors know about your fundraising event and recruit their participation! It can be a great way to bring a community together in a beneficial way.
  3. Try micro-volunteering! Micro-volunteering is a form of virtual volunteering allowing people to serve nonprofits in an indirect way. A nonprofit may ask for a task to be completed online and a volunteer will respond to the task at hand. Service projects can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours. Websites such as sparked.com are great resources to find micro-volunteering opportunities!
  4. Assemble care packages or food baskets. Contact your local meals on wheels organization, church, or food bank and see what kinds of foods they are looking for. You can assemble meals for those who use their services and deliver them to be used for their community members. You can also check out veteran services to see how you can get involved in having an overseas pen pal!
  5. Bring out your inner artist! Turn your hobby into a service project!
    • Make pictures for a retirement center
    • Knit scarves, mittens, or hats for a local shelter
    • Make baby blankets for a women and children’s home
    • Make jewelry for a women’s shelter
    • Design dog or cat collars for an animal shelter or make toys

iHubs: Strengthening Our Civic Network

HandsOn Network is engaged in a focused field investment strategy called Innovation Hubs (iHubs), designed to dramatically accelerate the growth, effectiveness and impact of our network. Through iHubs we are engaging a cohort of our strongest, most progressive market leaders to formulate innovative approaches and pilot best-in-class initiatives with the intent of scaling the most impactful opportunities to benefit the entire network, and ultimately, the communities we serve.

In 2011, through a competitive application process, 10 affiliates were selected to comprise the initial iHub cohort. Leveraging resources provided by Points of Light’s Service Generation Campaign, these affiliates also received leadership development training, coaching and $30,000 in seed funding to launch and learn from their own concepts of innovation. By 2014, we plan to expand to 30 iHubs.

Our strategy compels a conversation that teams with possibility. Imagine the potential of a learning cohort of nonprofit executive leaders and funders who are committed to identifying, testing, implementing and evaluating replicable models for 21st century volunteer engagement. Imagine the power of 30 iHubs to change local communities and to influence, guide and mentor an additional 230 HandsOn Network affiliates. As a result, we have the opportunity to lift up the work of the entire network and test cutting-edge strategies for engaging more than 70,000 nonprofit partners and millions of volunteers.

Boston Cares believes their future and the future of HandsOn Network depends more than just telling stories, but requires showing them. They use new tools including info graphics, data animation and visual statistics to reveal volunteerism for what it is – our nation’s most untapped resource.

Seattle Works is building on the concepts of collective giving and team-based volunteering to break down the silos between donors, volunteers and causes. Their innovative concept is to develop an integrated service model that brings together groups of investors and creates unified teams to seed, lead, staff and support projects from concept to evaluation.

One of the more provocative iHubs projects comes to us from HandsOn Greater Portland. As a way to lessen their dependence on more traditional funding sources, this affiliate seeks to test market the feasibility of offering tailor-made service learning experiences and issue-based service opportunities to individuals and groups for a fee.

By investing in iHubs, there is an opportunity to significantly expand and transform the nation’s long-standing civic infrastructure. Boost that Resume, Volunteer!

Are you a recent graduate looking for a new job? Maybe you are someone who is looking a for a new career path to develop some skills? Volunteering is the best outlet possible to do all of these things!

Why? Volunteer work benefits your professional goals because it allows you to acquire new skills that your professional degree may not allow you to develop otherwise. Volunteer work is also a great way to cram the gaps in your work history.

Assertiveness: You can develop your assertive skills by serving as a fundraiser soliciting pledges or support. Recruit others to support an organization or cause.

14 Ways to Better Engage Your Volunteers

Most volunteer managers can agree, retaining regular volunteers can be a daunting task at times. It is important to not get discouraged when you are constantly seeing more new faces than familiar faces. Remember, one hundred percent retention of volunteers is an unrealistic goal.

You may be asking yourself, “how can I ever retain one volunteer if the odds are against me?’ Check out the tips below to help ensure a more active volunteer group within your organization or at your service projects!

  • Opportunities for evaluation: Evaluation can be informal. Just read your volunteer’s body language and verbal cues to see how they are feeling about the project. If their cues seem more negative than positive, ask them to come talk. You can ask them questions such as, “what do you like most about your job?” or “what can we do to make your time more fulfilling?”
  • Vacations and leaves of absence: To ensure volunteer enthusiasm and interest, offer regular volunteers the option of promotion for good performance. If your volunteer is feeling overwhelmed by personal obligations, allow them a leave of absence or vacation until they are able to serve again. Keep in touch with them to let them know that you care about their well-being.
  • In-service training: Training can be a great reward for dedicated volunteers to learn valuable skills for not only their volunteer work, but also their personal life. If your organization has a conference coming up or an opportunity to meet with a professional trainer in the field, reward them with the opportunity.
  • Staff meetings: Allow volunteers to attend staff meetings within your organization in order to give them a voice in projects. If that is not possible, coordinate volunteer team meetings so that they can share opinions.
  • Presentations: Invite volunteers involved in an interesting project to share their work at a staff meeting.
  • Advocacy opportunities: Invite your volunteers to advocate with governmental agencies, their opinion may mean more because they are not paid to give it.
  • Volunteer advisory council: Form a volunteer council to help develop policies and share project ideas. The council should have the chance to meet with your organization’s board members, too.
  • Expense reimbursement: Reimburse your volunteers for their out of pocket expenses such as gas or clothing. Making a small budget for reimbursement will pay off in the long run.
  • Benefits: Treat your volunteers like your staff members. Volunteers need food and drink, a safe working environment, and excess insurance if they are driving frequently.
  • Personnel file: Keep record of your volunteers’ involvement so that you can right a reference later or be reminded of good performance. This file will help you keep track of your dedicated volunteers.
  • Interesting tasks: Vary the work given to volunteers to ensure fulfillment and prevent boredom.
  • Respecting volunteers: No volunteer is “just a volunteer.” Remember, volunteers are unpaid staff members; they should be treated with the same respect as paid staff members.
  • Volunteer socialization: Create opportunities such as picnics or ice cream socials for volunteers to network and celebrate successes together.
  • Staff appreciation: Recognize and thank staff members that work well with volunteers. If staff feel appreciated, they are more likely to connect and interact with volunteers.

 

It is important to provide inclusive projects for both your volunteers and your staff members to guarantee retention. When volunteers feel their work is both meaningful and fulfilling, they are more likely to return.

8 Steps to Get Your Employee Volunteer Program Started

Individual and family volunteering makes a huge impact on the community. Employee volunteering will not only make an impact on the surrounding community, but also on the work environment. Employees who volunteer together will feel more connected to the community in which they work, and also closer to their coworkers.

Starting an employee volunteer program in your workplace is easy to do. It will help shape your company’s image because you will be giving back to the community that you work in. Follow the eight steps below to get your employee volunteer program started today!

  1. Assess both your employees’ and community’s interests and needs. Survey employees to assess their current interests and past volunteer experience. Check out your local HandsOn Network action center or other local volunteer center to find volunteer opportunities near your workplace.
  2. Identify business priorities and goals that can be met through an employee volunteer program. A successful program will reflect business goals while adding value to the overall business objective. You can use your business plans when writing up your employee volunteer program to better incorporate the two.
  3. Secure your company’s top management support. All levels of management and departments should encourage employee participation in the program. Identify senior managers that can participate in various projects to get better participation from all employees.
  4. Develop a program structure and program policies. Encourage participation from all employee levels. Try to develop an employee committee who can dedicate themselves to greater participation. Develop written policies about employee participation in service events (i.e. how many project must staff members participate in). Learn best practices of employee volunteer programs so that you may implement them into your program.
  5. Design volunteering projects in line with financial support. Try to volunteer at organizations that your company supports or is considering supporting. Your company’s philanthropy donations will mean more to the organization, if they are also backed by volunteer support.
  6. Measure the program and evaluate its results. Develop methods for measuring overall employee satisfaction with the program and actual participation. Regularly evaluate whether or not the program is meeting the company’s overall strategic goals. By answering these questions, you can begin planning the next projects to better meet these goals.
  7. Establish a rewards program for participating employees. Reward will help build program participation. Develop an awards system for employee
    s to encourage their participation from extra vacation time to a t-shirt.
  8. Publicize your company’s efforts both internally and externally. You can communicate your employee’s efforts through the Internet or by contacting your local newspaper article. By reporting your results, the community will look more favorably at your company, and other companies may be more enthusiastic about starting a program of their own!

April Showers Will Bring May Flowers!

Happy May Day! It is a day to celebrate the beautiful flowers blooming in our communities and the last weeks of spring before the heat of summer rolls around. Take this opportunity to beautify your community by planting a flower garden in your neighborhood, home, or community center!

Flowers can beautify any dreary space. Have a park that could use some beauty? Clean it up and plant some flowers! Need to restore an old school? Add a school garden! Want to teach your kids about the environment? Teach them about the ecosystem through a garden. A garden can be the source of so many things from knowledge to food it is a wonderful way to get out and beautify your community, while celebrating an international holiday, as well!

Are you clueless when it comes to planting a flower garden? Check out our step-by-step guide that will get your project started with ease!

  1. Identify partners and leaders: Call on friends, family, schoolteachers, etc. to be volunteer leaders or to donate materials for the project. You will need rocks, hand towels, and flowers such as yellow, white, or light pink flowers. These flowers will bring butterflies to your garden.
  2. Set a location: Contact your local community organizations or centers about space they could donate to the project. Arrange a site visit with your team leaders to review the project plan before the volunteers arrive. Make sure you choose a location that receives a high amount of sunlight and a low amount of wind for plants at this time of year!
  3. Establish goals: Goals will help you plan the actual project and the outcome you wish to achieve. Make a goal and plan the project around that.
  4. Develop your plan: Ask yourself the following questions when developing your garden project:
    • Where can I get funding for the plants and the supplies?
    • What resources are available for use?
    • Where can I find enthusiastic green thumb volunteers?
    • How do I get the message out about the project?
    • Do I want to attach a learning aspect to the project?
    • Do I need help from volunteer leaders? What kind of leaders do I need?
    • How will we maintain the garden after the project is finished?
  5. Define a timeline: Set a timeline for the project: how long it will take to plant the flowers, obtain the supplies, and maintain the garden.
  6. Promote: Recruit volunteers through fliers, newspaper articles, or social media. You can do this yourself or recruit the help of volunteers depending on the size of your project.
  7. Empower youth leaders: Allow young people to suggest ideas and contribute to the overall project planning. Their voice and ideas are vital to ensuring a successful project.
  8. Reflect and recognize: After the project, reflect on the work that was accomplished. Thank your volunteers for their contribution to the project.

Your garden will be a great way to celebrate the month of May while improving your community’s overall well being. Gardens contribute to a better ecosystem, overall.

Warm Fuzzies for Volunteers

Although today marks the finale of National Volunteer Month, it is time to carry volunteer recognition year-round! Did you have fun recognizing your volunteers dedicated work during National Volunteer Day? Want to know how you can do this more often? Answer these 10 questions and your recognition program will come to life before your eyes!
1.     How much staff time can be devoted to developing a recognition program within your organization? Will your program by administered by the local office or national headquarters?
If your organization has the available resources, develop a recognition team who can focus on developing this program. If you have a bi organization, decide whether or not your award program can be based locally. Decide which local chapters can support awards, and which awards are local.
Who should be included in the development of the program?
If you make the decision not to form a recognition team, who should be involved instead? The CEO, the marketing team, and/ or the programs team?
3.     How can senior management contribute to the program?
Should your program get funding from sponsors or internally? How can board members be included?
4.     How can the volunteer program meet the needs of the overall volunteer program and recognition requests?
The recognition program can help meet volunteer goals because it will motivate them to continue their work and excel at their assigned tasks. It will help volunteers feel motivated and appreciated for their work.
5.     What are the best practices of similar organizations’’ recognition programs?
Network with other organizations and find out their best and worst practices with implementing a recognition program so that your program will be effective.
6.     Is there an existing recognition program that your organization can model?
Check out Points of Light’s Daily Points of Light Award, the President’s Volunteer Service Award, or the Service Impact Award. Implement the best practices of these programs into your program.
7.     Decide the best way to recognize your volunteers’ service. How do they want to be recognized?
It is most important to choose recognition program that best suits your organizations goals and needs. If you choose to hold a monthly volunteer social or write personal thank you cards for an extraordinary volunteer make sure you choose a program that models your program’s attitude.
8.     What will the award criteria and eligibility rules include? Who will judge the final nominations?
Make decisions about what applications your award will consider and which it will not. Make sure to include these rules in your description of the award to make the applicants aware. Make the decision to designate a special team to judge applicants or another system.
9.     How will the volunteer award be announced? How can you promote the award and the honorees?
Make the decision whether you will hold a luncheon, a public ceremony, or contact local media press. Will you promote the award through social media, emails, or newsletters? If you decide to promote externally, will you contact your local paper or use word of mouth?
10.  Should this award be developed externally?
Do you need to bring in extra minds to develop the project? How will you fund the program? What skills will you need?


It is easy to develop a volunteer recognition program for your organization. Make a list and answer these questions based on your organization’s goals and resources. Recognition can vary from volunteer breakfasts to newspaper write-ups. Choose a program that will work for you!

Get Creative and Say “Thank-you” to Volunteers

National Volunteer Weeks is a time to “celebrate people in action!” Volunteers contribute so much everyday to the community, with little or no recognition for the work that they do. The Independent Sector values volunteer time in 2011 to be $21.79. We believe their contributions are worth more than any money could buy!

If you love volunteers like we do, why not show them your love this week and beyond. This week is the perfect time to start showing your recognition for the work that your volunteers are doing.   1. Present your volunteers with handwritten appreciation certificates
  2. Host a theme party for your volunteers (toga, tea party, Hawaiian theme)
  3. Send a kind smile their way
  4. Outreach to local media for volunteer project coverage or thank you write up to volunteers
  5. Send them candy for a job well done
  6. Create a volunteer suggestion box and show them that you value their opinion
  7. Shake hands with your volunteers and thank them for a job well done
  8. Invite volunteers to staff meetings so that they  have a voice in organizational decisions
  9. Is your organization hosting a conference? Develop a special award for volunteers to allow them to go for free!
  10. Have a volunteer of the month hall of fame
  11. Host a volunteer party catered by a local restaurant. Include a volunteer red carpet for their entrance.
  12. Provide coffee and breakfast for an early volunteer event.
  13. Take pictures of volunteers at the service project and share them on social media.
